Celebrating a Historic Partnership

The celebration aligns with Proclamation No. 1282, which declared 22 May 2016 and every year thereafter as Philippine Australia Friendship Day. The proclamation underscores the Philippine government’s policy of strengthening relations with countries that share common history, values, and traditions.

Formal diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Australia began in 1946 with the establishment of the Australian Consulate-General in Manila. Since then, the two nations have fostered strong cooperation in development assistance, trade, security, and cultural exchange.

On 8 September 2023, bilateral relations have further deepened. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Anthony Albanese witnessed the signing of the Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership at Malacañang Palace, elevating ties to expand collaboration in defense, maritime security, climate action, education, and economic development.

President Marcos described the partnership as a significant milestone reflecting the two countries’ long-standing cooperation and shared aspirations for growth and prosperity, while Prime Minister Albanese emphasized the strengthened commitment to regional security and closer collaboration across various sectors.

Strengthening Community and Cultural Bonds

The Philippines and Australia share eight decades of friendship, with cooperation spanning defense and security, economic relations, and people-to-people exchanges. Australia remains one of the Philippines’ key partners in defense and development assistance, as well as a major destination for Filipino migrants and professionals.

The 80th Philippines–Australia Friendship Day Commemoration aims to celebrate this enduring relationship at the community level, promoting cultural understanding and reinforcing the strong ties that unite both nations.

Community members, families, and supporters are encouraged to attend and join the celebration of friendship, partnership, and shared heritage. END #philippinesinaustralia
